When we bought our dilapidated old stone house in the middle of a small village in the Haute Valle de la Aude, we knew there was a lot of work to do. The work was to be done with us living in England and coming over every couple of months for a week or two at a time. We needed the right builder to get the job up and running.
We came across Ian Wigham by chance. We met, chatted through things and he seemed a good bet. We set to work in Autumn 2013 and the initial work went well, replacing the first and second floor structures within the first three weeks. Within the next few weeks after that, the main roof structure had been replaced and working with a colleague, the roof was tiled. This was an excellent start and gave us the confidence to continue with Ian.
Since late 2013, the work on the house continued, carried out by in various stages to suit our required programme. Ian has undertaken the majority of this work, including the construction of the terrace, the internal carpentry and joinery, metal stud partitions, insulation and plasterboarding, staircase installation, the fitting out of the kitchen and the wet rooms. Ian has also carried out a significant amount of lime rendering and pointing of the stonework walls both internally and externally. He also provided a new concrete ground floor slab, which was insulated, partly provided with electric underfloor heating and fully finished with terracotta tiles, all of which was undertaken by him. Where other trades were required, including the electrics, plumbing and the wood burner, Ian worked closely with these other people to make sure the work was properly co-ordinated. Since late Autumn 2014, the house has been 'stayable' and is now principally complete.
The work has been undertaken to a good standard and very much in sympathy with the feel of the property. Ian has not less us down when a programme has been agreed and he has worked in a diligent and positive way. All in all, a good job for Ian and a good job for us!
